Rory McIlroy win Tour Championship, FedEx Cup title in playoff

Rory McIlroy saved his best for the end of the PGA Tour season, and it netted him an enormous payday on Sunday at the Tour Championship.

McIlroy won the Tour Championship with a birdie on the fourth hole of a sudden death playoff, defeating a game Ryan Moore. In the process, McIlroy won the FedEx Cup, taking it from Dustin Johnson, who entered the playoff finale atop the standings.

McIlroy, Moore and Kevin Chappell all went to a playoff at East Lake after each finishing regulation at 12-under-par 268.

Meanwhile, Johnson, who shot a final-round of 3-over 73 to finish in a tie for sixth, had to wait. If McIlroy won the tournament, the Ulsterman would also win the FedEx Cup. If Moore or Chappell won, then Johnson would win the season-long race.

The three playoff competitors played the par-5 18th hole – formerly the ninth hole at the Atlanta club – in the first two playoff holes. Chappell only managed par after McIlroy left 6 feet for eagle after a monster drive and second shot. However, Moore applied pressure with a curling birdie putt. McIlroy’s eagle bid to win the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup slid by, for an $11.53 million miss – the value of the $10 million for the FedEx Cup and the $1.53 million for winning the Tour Championship.

On the second playoff hole, again on 18, both players made uninspiring pars after their birdies bids never really sniffed the hole.

Then Moore and McIlroy went to the peninsula green 15th hole, with McIlroy hitting the green from 201 yards but leaving 63 feet for birdie. Moore missed the green short but cozied up a chip to 18 inches for par. McIlroy’s first putt left 7 feet for par, which he made to extend the playoff again.

The pair moved to the par-4 16th, where McIlroy holed out from the fairway for eagle earlier in the round. Moore found an awkward lie in the collar around the green, while McIlroy was 10 feet away for birdie. Moore hit a poor chip shot, but then managed to snake in an astounding par. While Moore was riding high, McIlroy sank his birdie putt to put an end to the playoff, the tournament and the PGA Tour season. With his second win of the playoffs, backing up a Deutsche Bank Championship title, McIlroy is the champion of the 2015-16 PGA Tour season.

This is McIlroy’s first FedEx Cup title, becoming the ninth champion in 10 years of the concept.
