Eli Manning denies using 'Trump' as audible, but Brady does

Early in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams, Eli Manning barked out an audible that sounded a whole lot like “Trump! Trump!” Unremarkable, really; quarterbacks holler all kinds of words pre-snap to realign the offense. Heck, some fella used to holler “Omaha!” all the time.

But for whatever reason, Eli ran hard away from the suggestion that he had name-checked Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. “No. No Trump call. No Trump call,” Manning said after the game. “We had something very similar, but no. No. It was not a Trump. So no, no audible this week.” In other words: as with everything involving this election, who you gonna believe, me or your lying ears?

We can understand why Manning would want to deny the use of the word “Trump.” After an interminable 18 months, we’re all ready to be done with this election and the unhinged zealots who still pounce on any use of the word “Trump” or “Clinton.” (See the comments sure to follow this article for proof.)

But while Eli is running from Trump, the Patriots’ Tom Brady is embracing him … in the huddle, at least. Brady told WEEI on Monday morning that not only do the Patriots have a “Trump” audible, they have a “Clinton” one too. Brady offered a non-answer answer that clarified exactly nothing:

“Certainly a lot of people watching, so they listen to everything,” Brady told WEEI. “They have the microphones and you can pretty much hear everything. Obviously there is a lot of communication that goes on up front. It goes for both teams. A lot of mechanisms of your offense is based on what you say.”

In other words: teams talk prior to the snap. That talk is designed to help the offense outsmart the defense, and vice versa. Brilliant. Brady’s already a better politician than some we could name.

Oh, and as for the Giants’ mysterious “Trump” play: it was a handoff to Bobby Rainey, who ran to the left for exactly one yard. Draw whatever conclusions from that you wish.
