Eli Manning misunderstands question on Vikings, with awesome results

Everyone knows the phrase “they have your number” – everyone, that is, except Eli Manning.

On Sunday, Manning and the New York Giants will face the Minnesota Vikings, a team Manning has struggled against throughout his career. During a conference call with Vikings’ reporters, the quarterback was asked why the Vikings have his number, and Manning took the question literally:

“I don’t think anybody, eh, I don’t think anybody has my phone number on the Vikings. Maybe (former Giant) Linval (Joseph), I’m not sure. I’m trying to think if I have anybody’s number. Maybe somebody, I’m sure. I have (Sam) Bradford. I have his number. He’s got my number. Can’t think of anybody else’s off-hand though. I’ll look through my phone and get back to you.”

Manning may have misunderstood the question, or maybe he was deliberately being sarcastic, not wanting to address his career of bad games against Minnesota. Look at his game-by-game numbers against the Vikings – they’re not exactly worth writing home about:

That’s a 2-5 mark for Manning as starter against Minnesota in his career, with multiple interceptions in four of the seven games.

That includes that awful 2007 game, when not only did Manning have four interceptions, but three of them were returned for touchdowns. Manning has two other pick-6s against the Vikings, including one in his first start against them, in 2005, and one last year.

There may not be many players in the Minnesota locker room with Manning’s phone number, but over the years more than a few of their defenders know that seeing No. 10 could mean a good day.
