Is Todd Bowles' confidence in Ryan Fitzpatrick wavering?

In his 21 months on the job, New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles has shown himself, among other things, to be a firm decision-maker.

But on Tuesday, he showed that he may be waffling a bit when it comes to the most important position on his team: quarterback.

After the Jets’ 28-3 Monday night loss to the Arizona Cardinals, a game in which the team benched Ryan Fitzpatrick for Geno Smith in the fourth quarter, Bowles told reporters “Fitz is our starter.” That was in spite of Fitzpatrick throwing his league-leading 11th interception of the season, and with Fitzpatrick having led New York to only three offensive touchdowns over the last four games.

On Tuesday however, Bowles softened his stance, opening the door to the possibility that Smith could start on Sunday in Baltimore.

“First of all, after the game, it’s always going to be status quo because I’m never going to tell the media anything before I meet with my coaches and my GM and the rest of the staff, so everything is status quo until we have our meeting [Tuesday night],” Bowles told reporters.

The second-year head coach said he “revisited” the idea of which player should start after his postgame comments.

While Smith’s one possession under center ended with him also throwing an interception, Bowles gave a positive review of his appearance: “He did show some promise when he was in there. He understood the game plan and he did good for that drive he was in there.”

Asked if Smith could start on Sunday, Bowles said, “We have to talk about more than that. There’s a possibility every week there will be some changes made, player-wise.”

Bowles also said it’s “definitely possible” the 1-5 Jets could give their other quarterbacks, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, some game reps, but there are “stages to go” before the team gets to that point.
