Jason Pierre-Paul to miss rest of Giants' regular season after sports hernia surgery

Jason Pierre-Paul already had his fair share of bad luck when it comes to injuries. Now he’s dealing with more.

Pierre-Paul, the New York Giants defensive end who famously suffered severe hand injuries in a fireworks accident on July 4, 2015, had sports hernia surgery and will miss the rest of the regular season according to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY. JPP will miss 4-6 weeks, so it’s possible he could return at some point in the playoffs if the Giants get there.

That’s a huge blow for the Giants, who are 8-4 and lead the NFC wild-card race but have a tough schedule down the stretch. Pierre-Paul had seven sacks this season and was one of the Giants’ best playmakers on defense.

It’s also tough on Pierre-Paul, who was getting hot. Pierre-Paul had 5.5 sacks in the two games before Sunday, when he suffered the injury. Pierre-Paul, who is 27, was on a one-year $10 million deal as he tried to prove he could play with his hand injuries and get a long-term deal. Perhaps he has already shown he’s worth a mega-deal. Two weeks ago he was named NFC defensive player of the week for a dominant three-sack game against the Browns.

The reality for both sides is that Pierre-Paul isn’t returning until January, if he comes back to play at all this season. It’s a tough break for the team and the player.
