CHICAGO — Friday afternoon’s plane fire at O’Hare briefly shut down one of the world’s busiest airports, grounding dozens of flights and causing planes in the air to be diverted.

Among the passengers affected by the shutdown? Albina “Beanie” Maddon. The mother of Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon was stuck in the Philadelphia airport as she tried to travel to the Windy City for Game 3 of the World Series.

“Beanie” Maddon still lives in Hazleton, Pa., where Joe was raised.

“I guess there’s a problem at O’Hare right now,” Joe Maddon said during his pregame press conference. “So she’s stuck in Philly. Hopefully she’ll get here tonight or tomorrow.

“But that’s tough for Beanie right now, hanging out in Philly airport.”

American Airlines flight 383 caught fire on Friday afternoon. Seven passengers and one flight attendant were taken to the hospital for evaluation of minor injuries caused when the Boeing 767 was evacuated.

We’re glad everyone is OK, but imagine waiting 71 years for the Cubs to return to the World Series, spending $10K on tickets and then having the world’s worst luck when your plane gets stranded because of a one-in-a-million runway fire? It’s almost enough to make you believe in curses.

Planes began landing again around 5 p.m. giving lucky fans with tickets about two hours to navigate the Kennedy Expressway en route to Wrigley Field for first pitch.
