Les Miles says he accepts firing and wants what's best for LSU program

If Les Miles has any hard feelings about being fired from LSU, he certainly didn’t air them publicly Monday.

The now-former LSU coach appeared on the Dan Patrick Show and said he was told in-person by LSU athletic director Joe Alleva that he was being fired on Sunday.

“And I’m for the Tigers, anything that they see makes the Tigers better then I’m for them,” Miles said about changes to the coaching staff. “And I accept it — that outcome and will support that decision and these Tigers as we go forward.”

LSU fired both Miles and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron after the team’s game-winning touchdown vs. Auburn didn’t count Saturday because the play didn’t happen in time. While he said he could defend himself while saying LSU had a chance to win the game, he admitted that he could have done better.

“How that game ends, with the Tigers fighting for their breath … maybe there’s a way that the coach could have gotten them a second more,” Miles said. “I would argue that I made those moves. But one second — it’s certainly a decision that was made more appropriately over more than a second.”

The school famously flirted with dismissing Miles in 2015 in the midst of a three-loss season but decided to keep the coach. It made the decision in 2016 with a potential national-title contending team at 2-2. If the touchdown against Auburn would have counted, then LSU is 3-1 and it’s not a stretch to believe Miles still has his job.

Assistant coach Ed Orgeron has been named the team’s interim coach.

“It was beyond fighting,” Miles said about LSU’s decision. “The enjoyment of being here, the enjoyment of community, the experiences my family has had, they’re too important for me to fight over. It’s history, it’s what we are. And if they see a change that makes the Tigers better, then I am for them.”

Miles said he got a chance to meet with his team after he was told about his firing. When he was asked by Patrick if he wanted to coach again, Miles had this to say:

“I don’t golf. I play no tennis. I enjoy shooting the gun, I don’t necessarily like to point it at animals. I play cards, not very well. But what I have done for probably 12-14 hours a day for the last, I don’t know, number of years is coach football. I would have a difficult time not being involved in the game and not being a coach.”
