North Carolina will be without a longtime offensive line starter for the rest of 2016.

The school said Thursday that guard Caleb Peterson would miss the remainder of the season because of a back injury. He’s set to undergo surgery Friday in Dallas.

A senior, Peterson missed North Carolina’s last two games vs. Virginia Tech and Miami. He had started 30-straight games at left guard for the Tar Heels before the Virginia Tech game and had 42 career starts. He was an all-ACC second team selection in 2015.

Peterson’s injury means North Carolina will play the rest of the season without its starting guards. John Ferranto was slated to start at right guard but tore a pectoral muscle before the season began.

A third starter could miss Saturday’s game vs. Virginia as well. Jon Heck, the team’s right tackle, is listed as questionable on the UNC injury report. The News and Observer said Heck “appears unlikely” to play Saturday.

Peterson is the second major contributor for North Carolina to be declared out for the season this week. Wide receiver Mack Hollins broke his right clavicle vs. the Hurricanes and had surgery earlier in the week.
