Utah coach Kyle Whittingham announced that Cory Butler-Byrd has been partially reinstated to the team. He will be allowed to practice and participate in “other team activities,” but is still indefinitely suspended from game action.

Utah receiver Cory Butler-Byrd has reached a plea agreement after formally being brought up on charges earlier this month for a July incident.

Butler-Byrd was charged with criminal mischief for damaging a University of Utah police building and vehicle. Per the Salt Lake Tribune, that criminal mischief charge will be dismissed provided Butler-Byrd commits “no criminal offenses in the next year,” enters “mental health counseling” and pays $1,691.50 in restitution for the property damage. The receiver entered the guilty plea in court Monday afternoon.

Police said on July 27, Butler-Byrd, 21, was found “preparing to throw a large white sign” at a campus police building. The receiver also admitted he had already broken a window of the police building and jumped on top of a police car.

Butler-Byrd, an expected starter for the Utes, has been suspended indefinitely since Aug. 4 and has missed all of preseason camp. Per the Tribune, Butler-Byrd “was planning to meet with coaches after his court appearance.”

Butler-Byrd landed at Utah in 2015 after beginning his career at junior college. He played mostly cornerback for the Utes last year, registering 30 tackles, seven passes defended and three interceptions. His lone reception was a 56-yard touchdown against Cal. He also returned a kickoff 98 yards for a score vs. Fresno State.
